A Corsi-Rosenthal Box is a low-cost air cleaner you can build yourself from a standard box fan and four or five furnace filters taped into a cube. Born in the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, it became a grassroots phenomenon in classrooms, offices and homes because it moves a remarkable amount of clean air for the money. This guide explains who invented it, exactly how it works, why it spread so quickly, and where the design honestly falls short. We will also look at how a properly engineered, sealed unit delivers the same clean-air performance far more quietly and tidily.
Who invented the Corsi-Rosenthal Box?
The design emerged in August 2020, when indoor airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2 was a pressing worry and commercial air purifiers were expensive and often out of stock. Richard Corsi, an air-quality engineer and now Dean of Engineering at the University of California, Davis, floated the idea of taping filters to a box fan on social media. Jim Rosenthal, a Texas filter manufacturer, built and tested the first cube-shaped version. The two names became attached to the design, and the open-source, patent-free "Corsi-Rosenthal Box" was born.
Crucially, neither inventor sought to profit from it. They shared the concept freely so that anyone, anywhere, could build effective air cleaning from parts available at a local hardware shop. That spirit of open engineering is a large part of why it caught on.
How does a Corsi-Rosenthal Box work?
The principle is simple. A box fan sits on top of a cube whose four walls (and sometimes the base) are made from MERV-13 pleated filters. The fan draws air in through all of the filter faces at once and pushes clean air out of the top. Because the air is spread across four or five large filters rather than one, the total filter surface area is huge.
That large area is the secret. It means air passes through the media slowly, so each filter offers little resistance, the fan can move plenty of air, and a high proportion of particles are captured on the way through. The result is a strong CADR (Clean Air Delivery Rate) for very little cost. MERV-13 media captures roughly 93 per cent of airborne particles, including many in the fine range that carry viruses and wildfire smoke.
What makes MERV-13 the right filter?
MERV, or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, rates how well a filter traps particles of different sizes. MERV-13 is the sweet spot for indoor air: it captures a high share of fine particles, including the 0.3 to 1 micron range most relevant to respiratory viruses and smoke, while still letting air flow freely enough for a modest fan to push through.
Go lower than MERV-13 and you miss too many small particles. Go higher, to true HEPA, and airflow resistance rises sharply, choking a box fan and slashing the clean-air output. The Corsi-Rosenthal design deliberately trades a little per-pass efficiency for much greater airflow, and across a whole room that trade-off wins.
Why did it become so popular?
Three reasons. First, cost. A homemade box could be assembled for a fraction of the price of a commercial purifier, putting clean air within reach of schools and community groups on tight budgets. Second, effectiveness. Independent testing repeatedly showed the cube delivering clean-air rates that rival or beat purifiers costing several times more. Third, community. Because the plans were free and the build needed no special tools, thousands of parents, teachers and volunteers ran build days and shared their results.
By the 2021-2022 school year, Corsi-Rosenthal Boxes were humming in classrooms across the UK, Europe and North America. For many people it was their first hands-on lesson that indoor air quality is something you can measurably improve yourself.
The honest downsides of the DIY box
The Corsi-Rosenthal Box is excellent science, but the DIY execution carries real trade-offs that fans rarely mention.
- It is bulky. A cube of furnace filters plus a box fan is a large object, often 60cm or more per side, that dominates a corner of the room.
- It is loud. Box fans are cheap axial fans never designed for continuous filtration. Run one fast enough to move useful air and it produces a droning hum many people find hard to live with, so it gets turned down or switched off.
- It degrades. The whole structure is held together with tape. Adhesive dries out, seams peel, cardboard shrouds sag and filters slump over the months.
- It looks industrial. Exposed grey filters and packing tape are fine in a workshop but jar in a living room or bedroom.
- Air leaks if built badly. Gaps at the corners or a poorly sealed fan let unfiltered air bypass the media, quietly cutting real-world performance well below the headline figures.
The honest verdict
The Corsi-Rosenthal Box deserves its reputation. As a piece of open, practical engineering it democratised clean indoor air and proved that filter area beats brute force. If you want a cheap, fast project and do not mind the noise or the looks, building one is a genuinely worthwhile weekend job.
But the physics that make the box work do not require a rattly box fan or a tape-and-cardboard shell. A well-engineered, properly sealed unit uses the same large MERV-13 filter area, drives it with quiet, efficient fans, and eliminates the air leaks. You keep the airflow and the particle capture, and lose the noise, the bulk and the industrial look. That is the gap our kits are designed to close.
